Domain Name Guides

Choose a name you can keep, and understand what connects it to your site.

Your domain is the address people use to find your blog. Choose a name that's easy to read, explain, and keep using if your subject grows.

Registration, DNS, hosting, and email are separate services. Keeping those responsibilities clear makes it easier to move your website without breaking something else.

Choose and Protect the Name

Compare the continuing cost and account controls, rather than choosing only by a first-year offer.

  • Check renewal charges and any premium pricing for the exact name.
  • Use an account you control and enable strong authentication.
  • Keep renewal and recovery details current.
  • Consider whether the name restricts the subjects you want to cover later.

Understand the DNS

DNS records direct different kinds of traffic. Website records and mail records serve different purposes; changing one should not mean replacing the whole zone.

  • A and AAAA records associate names with IP addresses.
  • CNAME records point a name to another hostname.
  • MX records specify where incoming mail is delivered.
  • TXT records can carry verification and mail-policy information.
